(Auspicious seal)

Most official seals and bank seals are written in "seal script" or "insho style (auspicious seal)".

Of the six typefaces, the one most commonly used for seals and the one that has been used the longest is Tensho. The seals stamped on Japanese banknotes, the "Tennougyo-ji" used by the Emperor, and the seals used by the Japanese government for official documents are almost all in Tensho. In other words, this typeface, which is the ancestor of modern kanji, has the most traditional and authentic character shapes. Therefore, if you can't decide which typeface to use, it's a good idea to go with Tensho.

Inso-tai (Kisso-in) is an arrangement of the Tensho style, where characters are joined at the ends of the characters or connected to a round outer frame. Like Tensho style, this style is also often requested for official seals and bank seals.

Arrangement of characters when using only the last name or first name

It's not a matter of whether vertical or horizontal is better, but rather which looks better.

Official seal

Generally, full names are used, just like in the name fields on driver's licenses and insurance cards.

However, since women often change their surname when they get married, when they have it made while they are single, we often engrave only their first name rather than their full name.

If you are unsure which style of calligraphy to choose, seal script or inso script would be a good choice.

(The diameter of the seal is generally 13.5mm for women and 15mm or 16.5mm for men.)

The most popular style of calligraphy for official seals is the seal script style.

Ten

When Qin Shi Huang unified China, he standardized the various characters that had been used in various countries and regions up until that time, and this was called the Tensho style. If we go back even further, we arrive at pictographs, but this style of writing is the root of modern characters. The seals stamped on Japanese banknotes are also in Tensho style.
Along with Inso-tai, it is often chosen as the font for official seals.

Font Description
